REHDA welcomes removal of price controls

The Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (REHDA) welcomes the announcement made by the newly appointed Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad that he is considering to do away with the price control mechanism and will ensure a sufficient supply of consumer goods in the market.

REHDA President, Mr. Ng Seing Liong expresses hope that the Ministry will also look at addressing the cement and steel shortage issues that have been plaguing the housing and property development industry over the past months.

The association further calls for market liberation for building materials. Specifically, REHDA is proposing for the cement price control to be lifted, the automatic price mechanism (APM) for cement to be scrapped, the exports for steel bars and cement to be banned and the imports for steel bars and cement to be allowed as immediate measure.

“Such controls benefit only the producers and not in the interest of the industry and property buyers”, Mr. Ng said.
