REHDA Welcomes Quota Setting on Steel Bars and Cement Exports

Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (REHDA) welcomes the Government’s initiative to study the possibility of imposing a quota on steel bars and cement exports to ensure adequate domestic supply.

As an immediate measure, REHDA also urges the Government to temporarily ban or impose 15% to 20% export taxes until the quantum of the quota system is ascertained as well as to lift all import taxes allowing free importation of steel bars and cement.

The President of REHDA Malaysia, Datuk Ng Seing Liong expressed that such a move would help curb the acute shortages of steel and cement faced by the industry while preventing delays and disruption to construction schedule amidst the escalating development costs.

“REHDA hopes to see the proposed quota system effectively implemented as a way to address the critical challenges facing the housing sector in these trying times,” Datuk Ng added.
