REHDA objects to imposition of higher housing quota

REHDA Malaysia welcomes the statement by Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan that the move by the Kedah Pakatan Government imposing 50% from previously 30% housing quota for Bumiputera effective September 1 would be akin to killing the housing industry. The Association also opposes the compulsory allocation of 50% Malays lots for all housing development projects in the Kedah state, including those on freehold land.

REHDA President Datuk Ng Seing Liong said, “The new policy will have serious repercussions on the state’s housing industry. The survivability of developers will be threatened if they are to be further burdened with such additional significant holding costs in view of the current economic challenges and escalating development costs”.

“We regret to see that the Pakatan Government is going backwards instead of forwards in the review of the Bumiputera quota policy. We urge the state government to seriously consider the implications of such policy implementation as there would be great social and economic impact on industry players as well as house buyers in the state of Kedah,” he said.

Datuk Ng reiterated that REHDA has for a long time now called for a more standardised, structured and transparent Bumiputera quota release mechanism and that quota should not exceed 30%. Additionally, Bumiputera discount should be capped at 5% and be only applicable for houses RM250,000 and below.

“We need the release mechanism so that developers have an avenue to dispose of their unsold Bumiputera lots. We hereby urge the Government to review and adopt an automatic Bumiputera quota release mechanism immediately across all states” Datuk Ng added.
